Interestingly, I think we ... I have no answer simply necessary that we know with certainty whether they are here or not. are probably right under our noses.

Well, it depends on your definition of smart, really, but there is still some there that are much more advanced than we, and others who are much less advanced.
Will we ever be with them? Extremely unlikely. Taking into account all factors such as distance, speed is possible, the number of civilizations, the number of possible addresses, etc. ..
